This weekend saw the beginning of Enterprise Week at the University of Edinburgh. On Friday over 100 students engaged in 2 enterprise events ran by Launch.ed and the University of Edinburgh Careers Service.
Social Storm, a 24 hour hackathon looking to solve social issues saw 28 University of Edinburgh students work through the night, collaborating across 8 different countries and 20 different universities. Pierre Andrew Belle and Euan Brigs from the University of Edinburgh were involved in the winning team Dorsey – African Bonds.

Last night we saw £150,000 awarded to Scotland’s next generation of entrepreneurs, congratulations to all of the Converge Challenge 2016 finalists and winners!
The evening consisted of inspiring talks from the likes of Professor Susan Deacon Assistant Principal External Relations at the University of Edinburgh and Lord Karan Bilimoria CBE DL, Chairman and co-founder of Cobra Beer Partnership.

This week we said farewell to our fantastic enterprise cheerleader and all-around marketing extraordinaire Sarah Scace.
Sarah has now started her new post as Marketing Director at PureLIFI. PureLIFI is a spinout company from the University of Edinburgh, who are world leaders in Visible Light Communications technology enabling ubiquitous, high-speed, secure data networks wherever there is illumination.

The University of Edinburgh is leading the way for £150k prize with a total of five finalists in both the main Converge Challenge category and the KickStart award category
Scotland’s leading company creation competition and start-up development programme for students, graduates and staff from the country’s universities announces its shortlist of nominees for 2016.
From 212 applicants this year, the judging process has now shortlisted the top 10 nominees for each of the competition’s three categories:
The 2016 Converge Challenge category has been the most competitive year yet and includes two previous top 10 finalists and runners up from both the KickStart and Social Enterprise award categories. Converge Challenge’s commitment to nurturing new business ideas through its entrepreneurial development programme and expert advice has led to a strong pipeline of new business ideas being developed year on year. During a high energy day, twenty-two of Scotland’s most promising entrepreneurs pitched their businesses to an expert panel of judges in order to win up to £100,000 each in grant funding and loans. Winners were also announced for the Higgs EDGE, which seeks to identify technology businesses with global commercialisation potential, Young EDGE, for entrepreneurs under the age of 30, and Wild Card EDGE for businesses who have yet to commence trading.
Start-ups and Spin-outs from the University of Edinburgh did particularly well with over £250k secured to grow University supported enterprises. These enterprises competed against 239 applicants that entered this round of Scottish Edge. Read More
The entrepreneurial successes of University of Edinburgh staff, students and alumni were celebrated on Thursday 9th June at the annual Inspire Launch Grow Awards.
The Awards recognise the exceptional entrepreneurial talent within the University and those who have started to develop their own business or have identified commercial applications for their research.
Twelve finalists shortlisted for this year’s final worked for 3 months to develop their propositions and pitches for this final showcase event. Read More

Student Startup Two Big Ears joins Facebook A student startup from the University of Edinburgh is joining social media big-hitters Facebook. Alumni Abesh Thakur and Varun Nair who started their company Two Big Ears while studying at the University of Edinburgh and have recently seen the fruits of their labour. Two Big Ears a company that specialises in virtual reality (VR) audio solutions has been bought by Facebook the social media giant.
Abesh Thakur, the firm’s chief executive, said:
“Our mission is to make VR audio succeed across all devices and platforms and continue to help creators make the best experiences for billions of people across the world.

BEAM, which sells LED light up shoes for adults, was set up by two friends Serena and Gus in November 2015. Serena, who graduated from the University of Edinburgh in July 2015, found inspiration for the idea while dancing away at a festival in Iceland. She tested her theory during the Fringe festival that summer was blown away by the response. With not a moment to lose, she sought the help of a long term friend and experienced business partner, Gus.
BEAM has a growing range of light up shoes. Maybe you remember having them as a kid? They have a rubber sole which has a series of LED lights in it which are switched on and off via a little button near the top of the laces. Once on, there are 7 colour options for the lights, and an eighth option which flashes through all the colours. This means that you can have the shoes independently on different colours for a variety of different glowing combos. They come with a handy USB charger and the battery lasts for at least 8 hours.
