Entrepreneur: Dr. Richard Walker
College/School: Research Assistant, School of Engineering
Company: Photon Force

The Story: While a postdoctoral researcher in the School of Engineering, Richard was frustrated with the bulky, slow and restrictive nature of the available single photon imaging technology – a technology that is in high demand for many applications – including biomedical imaging. Richard saw an opportunity and began developing an integrated image sensor solution that delivers a significant competitive advantage with respect to incumbent systems. Richard spun his company, Photon Force Ltd, out from the University in March 2015. Photon Force Ltd designs, builds and supplies scientific sensors that can very precisely detect and measure single photons – the tiny building blocks of light.

Shortly after forming his company, Richard was named a runner-up in the 2015 Inspire Launch Grow Innovation Cup Competition, winning £1,000. With his company formed and his first competition win under his belt, Richard then earned a coveted Royal Society of Edinburgh Enterprise Fellowship a few months later, giving him a year to work on his idea. He then went on to win the 2015 Converge Challenge, getting a great boost from the £35,000 in cash and additional £25,000 in support. Finally, Richard capped off his year of competition successes with a £65,000 win when he was named a finalist in the 2015 Scottish Edge Competition.
